NOT Hot for Teacher: Former PSU Student Sues for $1.2M After Professor Obsesses Over Her BDSM Past

When you were in college, did you ever share any of your personal life with your professors? That’s exactly what Whitney “Theda” Orlando (L) did when she began working closely on a project with her professor, Marcia Klotz (R). Whenever you share intimate details about yourself with others, it can be seen by some as an open invitation for them to dig deeper. Professor Klotz employed her student on a research project that had the two women working closely together, whereupon a collegial friendship blossomed.

"Although this image is not of Whitney we thought Fun Monique looks like a naughty student :)"

According to the Portland Oregonian, the research was of a sexual nature, par for the course as Klotz taught an “Erotics of Power” course and once published a paper that decries what constitutes as porn, aptly titled “It’s Not Really Porn”. Orlando was asked to join the project and she opened up to Klotz about her sexual history, revealing that she had been a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of a former teacher, and that she had also once been a BDSM fetish model. Then, things took a turn for the weird.

Over the course of three years, Klotz and Orlando vollied over 200 emails regarding details that Orlando now says she was uncomfortable sharing with her professor. Klotz allegedly pursued Orlando relentlessly, fixating on her BDSM past, even going so far as to imply that she and the student recreate the abuse with some BDSM play. When Orlando switched research projects (and professors), she claims that Klotz took the bad PR route, calling out Orlando for plagiarism. She also alleges that the stress over this situation has caused her to develop a heart palpitation, and is seeking $1.25 million in damages and lawyer fees.

Does Miss Orlando, who has since moved on and is a professor at Arizona State University, have a real case against Portland State University? Did Mrs. Klotz simply carry out an edgy research project that grew sexually explicit and out of control, or was it sexual harassment? What do you think?
